Stacking Fault Driven Phase Transformation in CrCoNi Medium Entropy Alloy

نویسندگان

چکیده

Phase transformation is an effective means to increase the ductility of a material. However, even for commonly observed face-centered-cubic hexagonal-close-packed (fcc-to-hcp) phase transformation, underlying mechanisms are far from being settled. In fact, different pathways have been proposed, especially with regard nucleation hcp at nanoscale. CrCoNi, so-called medium-entropy alloy, fcc-to-hcp has long anticipated. Here, we report in situ loading study neutron diffraction, which revealed bulk CrCoNi 15 K under tensile loading. By correlating deformation characteristics fcc development phase, it shown that was triggered by intrinsic stacking faults. The confirmation adds myriads available together underpin unusually large low temperatures.

Exceptional damage-tolerance of a medium-entropy alloy CrCoNi at cryogenic temperatures

High-entropy alloys are an intriguing new class of metallic materials that derive their properties from being multi-element systems that can crystallize as a single phase, despite containing high concentrations of five or more elements with different crystal structures. Here we examine an equiatomic medium-entropy alloy containing only three elements, CrCoNi, as a single-phase face-centred cubi...

MoNbTaV Medium-Entropy Alloy

Guided by CALPHAD (Calculation of Phase Diagrams) modeling, the refractory medium-entropy alloy MoNbTaV was synthesized by vacuum arc melting under a high-purity argon atmosphere. A body-centered cubic solid solution phase was experimentally confirmed in the as-cast ingot using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The measured lattice parameter of the alloy (3.208 Å) obeys the ru...

Dislocation mechanisms and 3D twin architectures generate exceptional strength-ductility-toughness combination in CrCoNi medium-entropy alloy

Combinations of high strength and ductility are hard to attain in metals. Exceptions include materials exhibiting twinning-induced plasticity. To understand how the strength-ductility trade-off can be defeated, we apply in situ, and aberration-corrected scanning, transmission electron microscopy to examine deformation mechanisms in the medium-entropy alloy CrCoNi that exhibits one of the highes...

Size effect, critical resolved shear stress, stacking fault energy, and solid solution strengthening in the CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) comprise a novel class of scientifically and technologically interesting materials. Among these, equatomic CrMnFeCoNi with the face-centered cubic (FCC) structure is noteworthy because its ductility and strength increase with decreasing temperature while maintaining outstanding fracture toughness at cryogenic temperatures. Here we report for the first time by single-c...

Microstructures of Long-Period Stacking Ordered Phase of MgZnY Alloy

The microstructures of ¡-Mg, long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases, and kink bands in a MgYZn alloy were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that extruded Mg97Zn1Y2 alloy included different kinds of phases: 2H-Mg, 2H-Mg with many stacking faults, 14H and 18R. Kink bands tended to occur in areas where there were many intermetallic compounds. The element ...
